Berkenweg, landscape with trees – Berkenweg, landschap met bomen

Bodifée made many of his work in and around his native city of Deventer. He possibly made this Berkenweg – Birch-way – there too. Birches are a recurring theme in his work. He, for example, showed two pictures of the same title at a solo exhibition in the city of Den Bosch in 1907. It’s not known for certain whether this painting was one of the pictures on the exhibition.

The painting shows Bodifée as the painter of the sunlit, atmospheric landscape. The sunlight, from the left, creates a beautiful effect of dappled light and shadows on the trees and fences.

Bodifée maakte veel schilderij in en om zijn woonplaats Deventer. Mogelijk maakte hij daar ook deze Berkenweg. Berken zijn een terugkerend motief in zijn werk. Zo toonde hij op een solo-tentoonstelling in Den Bosch in 1907 twee schilderijen met de titel Berkenweg. Het is niet met zekerheid te zeggen of dit schilderij een van de werken op die tentoonstelling was.

Het schilderij toont Bodifée als schilder van het zonovergoten, sfeervolle landschap. Het licht, schuin vanaf links, zorgt voor een fraai spel van licht en schaduw op de bomen en hekken.

Paul Bodifée (1866-1938) was born in Deventer. After having trained as a draughtsman, he continued his studies at the Amsterdam Academy. There, he was taught by progressive academy director August Allebé. Landscape painter Théophile de Bock was also among his teachers. After his education, he himself also became a landscape painter and art teacher in his birthplace. Most of his oeuvre consists of landscape paintings in a style akin to the Hague school painters like Anton Mauve and Geo Poggenbeek.

Paul Bodifée (1866-1938) werd geboren in Deventer. Na als tekenaar te zijn opgeleid, vervolgde hij zijn opleiding aan de Academie in Amsterdam. Daar kreeg hij onder meer les van de progressieve directeur August Allebé. Ook landschapsschilder Théophile de Bock gaf les aan Bodifée. Na zijn opleiding werd Bodifée zelf ook landschapsschilder, en ging hij in zijn geboorteplaats tekenles geven. Het grootste deel van zijn oeuvre bestaat uit landschapsschilderijen, geschilderd in een stijl verwant aan Haagse school kunstenaars als Anton Mauve en Geo Poggenbeek.
